Fight the Bite!!!

July - September is mosquito season. Here are some tips to help reduce the number of mosquitos in Riverlea and around your home.
  1. Number one -- eliminate standing pools of water!!! While some mosquitoes lay their eggs in ponds and swamps, other mosquitoes like to leave their eggs in standing water. Think about it...the fewer places mosquitoes can lay their eggs, the fewer mosquitoes there are! Help cut down the number of mosquitoes by following these few simple guidelines.
    • Mosquitoes can grow in containers that hold water for more than a week such as pop cans, buckets, bottles and discarded tires.
    • At least once or twice a week, empty water from flower pots, pet food and water dishes, birdbaths, swimming pool covers, buckets, barrels, and cans.
    • Keep your rain gutters clean! Gutters filled with debris are water catchers -- and thus mosquito breeding grounds.
    • Fix outdoor leaking faucets.
    • Clean ditches and curbs so water can flow.
    • Be sure to check for containers or trash in places that may be hard to see, such as under bushes or under your home. Fill holes that hold water with gravel or dirt.
  2. Clothing will help protect you from mosquito bites. Wear light-colored clothing so you can spot mosquitoes that might land on you, and when weather permits, wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to hide your skin from those pesky pests. Top it off with a hat.
  3. Place mosquito netting over infant carriers when you are outdoors with infants.
  4. Be aware of peak mosquito hours. Mosquitoes are most active and biting during the early morning and late evening hours. If outdoors at dawn or dusk, take extra care to use repellent and wear protective clothing.
  5. Install or Repair Screens. Some mosquitoes like to come indoors. Keep them outside by having well-fitting screens on both windows and doors. Offer to help neighbors whose screens might be in bad shape.
  6. Mosquitoes rest in tall weeds. Keep weeds cut short to help deter mosquitoes.

Spraying for mosquitos is another option. However we must ask, is it safe? Is it good for the environment? Is it a truly effective way to avoid mosquitos? More to come.....

Mention Riverlea When Buying Auto License Tags!!!

The Village of Riverlea receives approximately $11.00 per tag from the distribution of Auto Tag and Gasoline taxes, plus a portion of the $5.00 Motor Vehicle Tax. Unless Riverlea is shown as the "taxing district," and 2520 appears on your Ohio Passenger Registration Card (list under County, 2520, and under 2A, Riverlea), your license plate money and subsequent gasoline tax money will very likely go to Worthington, because of the Worthington Post Office Address (see image below).
